The CLEO project, funded by the Erasmus+ program, organises a Summer University at the University of Belgrade in Serbia, between September 10-16, 2023. It is destined for students from the project partners institution, including Central European University. The other project partners are the University of Belgrade (Serbia), ARMES (Italy), the University of Akureyri (Iceland), the University of Patras (Greece) and the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium).
The Summer University will explore the theme “Cultural Memory in Europe” through a range of discussions, seminars and activities. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2023. CEU students may be awarded 4 ECTS for completing the summer university.
The Summer University will provide a historical perspective on different forms of commemoration in various parts of Europe over the past century. Over the course of five days, we will explore the ways through which certain figures or events have become major participants in cultural memory, and how it contributes to national and European identity projects. Using various sources, we will
(1) discuss the changing perception of the national heroes in Europe by examining representations, practices and discourses on heroism and victimhood and
(2) prepare an exhibition related to this theme.
This summer course has two main goals: 1) to encourage cross-cultural discussion and critical thinking among various European students, and 2) to reflect creatively around post-heroism by preparing an exhibition which will be shown at the European House in Brussels. Students’ discussions and initiative are at the heart of this summer course; students are encouraged to discuss historiography, commemoration and memory-making by using examples from their own countries, and by comparing practices and narratives in other European countries.
Travel and accommodation will be covered by the program.

please send a short bio (200 words) as well as one page describing your research interest in the politics of memory, with a focus on heroes or victims. Successful applicants will receive training in creating visual content and will be encouraged to contribute to the online student exhibition on Europe’s historical memory.
