THE POLITICS OF EARLY LANGUAGE TEACHING
Hungarian in the primary schools of the late Dual Monarchy
by Ágoston Berecz
PhD Student, Department of History, CEU
The book will be presented by Prof. Victor Karády
The present book is the first volume of Pasts, Inc. Studies and Working Papers, a new publishing initiative of Pasts, Inc. (series editors: Constantin Iordachi and Balázs Trencsényi) which provides an opportunity for young researchers to publish specialized research findings, developed as a result of their participation in projects associated with Pasts, Inc. and the CEU Department of History.
Drawing on a wide array of sources, this book provides an in-depth look at how Hungarian was taught to ethnic Romanian and German children in the eastern tracts of the kingdom between the 1870s and the First World War. It covers the ever-harshening legislation from the period, reconsidering the role of state supervision and exploring the contemporary methodological debates as well as taking a closer look at classroom practices.
